Shard Scales are serpents made of glass that dwell within the dunes of shattered dreams. Here these expert hunters stalk the dunes, their clear jagged scales helping them blend in with the surrounding landscape of shattered glass. Shard Scales despise dreamers and will latch onto and bite into them, in hopes of causing the dreamer to wake up and leave their realm. However, the Shard Scales bites often leave shards of embedded glass that remain in the dreamer's subconscious even after waking up. Now back in the waking world these shards will cause the dreamer to see visions of nightmares. You see the glass of the Shard Scales weaken the veil between the material plane and the Everdream Expanse. So the nightmares being seen are not illusions but glimpses into the dream realm. While this causes your average individual to avoid the Shard Scales, in fear of being cursed with visions of nightmares. It is actually a creature sought out by the Oneironauts, or Dream Mages as they are colloquially called. In fact it is quite common for these mages to carry with them Shard Scale spyglasses, so they can look into the Everdream Expanse whenever needed.
