Listless Legions are towering undead abominations formed from the tormented souls of hundreds of humanoids who perished in the same place at the same time. Normally, when a person dies, their soul is guided to the afterlife by Nebaela, the Fog Weaver. However, when death occurs on a massive scale—such as in a great battle or disaster—Nebaela may become overwhelmed, unable to safely transport all the souls in time.
In these moments of delay, Viscerath, the god of undeath, seizes the opportunity. Rather than allow the souls to drift free, Viscerath binds them together, fusing them into a singular, grotesque entity. The result is a Listless Legion—a monstrous, writhing amalgamation of countless consciousnesses, all battling for control within a single undead form.
Though the souls were once individuals, their forced merger drives them mad. The Legion becomes unstable, violent, and prone to fits of destructive rage. Those slain by a Legion are not granted rest; instead, their souls are absorbed into the mass, feeding its strength and making it even more deadly.
To prevent such horrors, battlefields are often blessed by clerics shortly after the fighting ends, hoping to ward off Viscerath’s dark influence and protect the fallen. Fortunately, even if a Legion forms, it is bound to the area where the original deaths occurred, unable to wander far from its birthplace.
Listless Legions are often dismissed as myths or grim wartime stories, as they are rarely seen. When they do appear, it is typically on overcast or fog-shrouded days—when visibility is low, and the dead are hardest to distinguish from the mist.
This CR15 creature is called a Listless Legion and is an Undead that lives mostly within the Graveyard.
