Making their homes within these arid canyons is the Trengipi. A fascinating species of avian that spends as much time on its feet as it does in the sky. This is because their powerful legs and large feet make hopping in between rock outcrops quite simple. Their large wings are mostly utilized for crossing distances beyond their jumping capacity. However, they still use their powerful legs to launch themselves into the sky. Once airborne their large tails which usually work as a counterweight to keep them balanced while jumping, serves a different purpose. Special sacs filled with helium inflate to give themselves more lift in the air. This technique of launching into the sky mixed with inflatable tails allows the Trengipi to expend less energy flying. A useful adaptation in the harsh desert where resources are scarce. This marvelous tail does not just aid in conserving resources but also saving it. In the air the tail does inflate but when not in flight the tail serves as a fat deposit. Meaning the fatter the tail of the Trengipi the better health it is in. The quality of their tails also serves as a mating display. With the most desirable mates being those with the largest tails. Despite this bird's larger size their diet consists of small insects that hide among the cracks and crevices of the rocky canyon. Luckily for the Trengipi, they are equipped with a long narrow snout that is more than capable of fitting into their prey's hiding spots. Once there the Trengipi exhales hard out of its nose, which creates a gust of wind powerful enough to shoot the tasty insects out of their hiding places.
