Legends say that long ago a group of greedy alchemists attempted to create a creature that could grow valuable gemstones from their bodies. After countless tests they succeeded in creating the Rapacopteryx. This bird appears normal at first but overtime the magic imbued with it slowly converts its body into inorganic matter. Sprouting from this inorganic rocky material are the rare gemstones the alchemist craves. Sadly for these greedy alchemists this ability of the Rapacopteryx is more of a curse than a blessing. You see the gems created while valuable come with a great cost. Whoever spends enough time around the Rapacopteryx will begin growing gemstones of their own out of their bodies. Eventually if not careful these gem growths will overtake the individual's body completely. This curse also applies to the poor Rapacopteryx, as this process of self petrification eventually leaves the bird completely immobile. Soon after its stone body then breaks apart and crumbles to dust. However, this is not the end for the Rapacopteryx. The magics that cursed this bird also gave it the ability of resurrection. Amidst the dust of its destruction one can find a small gemstone egg. If this egg is placed either in extreme heat such as a volcano or intense fire the gemstone will hatch a baby Rapacopteryx. Legends say that having the gemstone egg exposure to great sources of wealth or treasure can also cause it to hatch. Most likely due to the origin of this creature coming from great greed.
