If you ever find yourself wandering near a gentle brook and you hear the faint squeaks of the Mottled Riversprite consider yourself lucky. These rarely seen amphibians often tuck themselves amidst the rocks, mud and moss of slow moving rivers. The Riversprites have been spotted rolling in mud in order to pack it into small concave pits on their backs. These mud pits then are used by these amphibians to grow moss that has adapted alongside the Riversprites. Whenever able the Riversprites seem to dedicate time meticulously maintaining their moss for both camouflage and mating display. The larger the moss bed and brighter the tail the more attractive young males are to potential mates. To further help maintain their mossy backs the Riversprites will rub oils on the moss to facilitate growth. This oil comes from glands on their facial caruncles. These striking bulbous growths cover most of the Riversprites face and have a variety of uses. From producing oil, keeping their faces clean and preventing the moss from growing too close to their eyes and hindering their vision. Speaking of eyes the Mottled Riversprite is covered in them, or at least that's what it wants predators to think. Their bellies are covered in patterns that resemble eyes. So if they are ever cornered by a predator this crafty amphibian will flip onto its back and wiggle around frantically while waving its bright red tail. In the hopes that the bizarre display mixed with the false eyes will scare or confuse the predator.
