Hopping from rock to rock along the coast of tropical islands one could spot a very grumpy looking bird, the Hedgwing. These birds are flightless but possess a set of powerful legs that allow them to jump great distances. The steep rocky terrain they inhabit mixed with a powerful jump is very helpful when avoiding predators. However, that is not their only survival advantage. Their back tail plumage is quite ornate and helps them in blending in with their surroundings. The coloration and size of the tail mimics tropical plants that grow in the Hedgwings environment. So if a Hedgwing feels the need to hide they simply sit down and hide behind their tail feathers in the hopes the predator will not spot them. These feathers are also used in mating displays with males that possess the larger tail feathers looking the most desirable to females.
