Among the beautiful biodiversity of aquatic life that inhabits Veargreum’s coral reefs lies a formidable predator. With their long flexible bodies they can slip in and out of tight crevices and coral structures while stalking their prey. Then once in range their mouth full of needle-like teeth expertly grab onto and prevent their slippery prey from escaping. This tactful hunter is known as the Briar Eel and gets its name from the needle like quills that sprout from its head and back. While not venomous these quills are made of a hard keratin material, making any would-be predator think twice before taking a bite. Another striking feature of this eel is their oddly shaped tail that resembles an axe. The blade of this tail is made of the same materials as their quills. The eels have even been spotted sharpening this tail blade along rocks like one would sharpen a sword or axe. However, this tail is rarely used as defense against predators but instead is wielded against rival Briar Eels. Reported duels show the eels have surprising control over these tail blades and fights often end with death or mutilation.
